happy Easter!

is anyone doing anything exciting? its saturday evening and we have already done the gardening, eaten our eggs and been out on an adventure. i woke up at 6 this morning - there must be a God - and so i woke up mark. we decided to drive up to the matakana markets. we got there as it began and i am so excited - i saw rhys darby! whoop whoop! love his stuff. and we still have two whole days left. happy.

as for the cute tiger above, he lives at the auckland zoo. we went along this week and they happened to be giving this amazing puss an Easter egg as part of an awareness-raising campaign. they were encouraging people to avoid products, including Easter eggs, that contain palm oil because the collection of it destroys the tigers habitats. i knew it wasn't a great product - i had no idea that some of it was so destructive. poor tigers! if you want more info, check out auckland zoo.

anyway, on this amazing holy weekend i hope you get to demolish some chocolate eggs, hot cross buns and enjoy a lovely holiday. if you go to church this weekend, say hi to the Big Guy for me.
so disappointing!
i've been avoiding op-shops (charity stores) and just going straight to the vintage stores. particularly on k rd. my faves are those in st kevins arcade - fast and loose, search and destroy, vixen and of course, aunty mavis!! love love love.

this post has been a long time coming. its not kiwiana, but it is about an outstanding kiwi.
we have this friend who never fails to blow our minds. she inspires me to be a much better friend. she has a 'don't take no for an answer' attitude when asking if there is anything she can do to help. she celebrates people. she is sincerely the most encouraging person i have ever met. seriously.
you know who you are, Emma!
in fact, my special friend mari and i would have a little competition before going to an event that Emma would be at - how many steps can we get into the room before Emma announces 'beautiful ladies!!'. we love it!
i tease mark about the fact that Emma has sent me more bunches of flowers than he has. and last week, when were having a really hard week, she dropped off a series of meals and organised another lovely friend to also drop dinner around for us. when times are tough, meals say love. we felt LOVED up.
usually, due to my cynical nature, i am suspicious of naturally up-beat and encouraging people. ha. but Emma is so sincere and consistent, there is no way you can spend any time in her presence and not feel like you're the shiz.
so, Emma, THANK YOU!!!
it's official - the sun shines out of your ass!
love you.

who else has an Emma story?

my love for crown lynn only began about 18 months ago. tut tut. don't make my mistake - it will be gone by the time you realise you cant exist without it. my kids will be raised to love it, whether they want to or not. though, i doubt something born from this body could not love crown lynn unconditionally.

p.s. the other day, whilst out on a serious charity-store binge, i came across this design. i had never seen it before, it was well priced, so obviously i had to make it mine. no choice. i have since discovered it was made by crown lynn for english pottery legend, alfred meakin. it is from the set called (i believe) 'parisian cafe' or 'parisian cafe scene'. interestingly, the bottom of the cup is stamped with the alfred meakin post war mark. that was 1945 onwards. yet, the saucer has the very standard 'made in new zealand' crown lynn stamp.

thank God all his family are safe. we are lucky. so lucky.

really, nz is a small place! i shit you not - when i lived in hong kong 3 hongkongese people said to me, 'oh, nz, do you know this person...?' i did know them all. i really did. i even knew where they worked. so something so catastrophic happening in such a small place - we all know someone down there or have relatives there, went to school there, had good holidays there, bad holidays there, have been skiing down there.

it got me thinking about what it means to be a kiwi. i am so incredibly proud to be a kiwi. smug, even. i believe i have grown up in the best country in the world, that as much as i LOVE hong kong, paris, vietnam, bristol, i really want my kids to have the 'best' upbringing. and for me, that's here. sure, it rains a lot (in auckland), but as my gran used to say, 'it's good for the ducks'. i cant think of anything that the rest of the world can think down on me for when i say that i am from new zealand. other than sports related shit. nothing. we haven't ripped anyone off, we don't have nukes, we let nearly anyone in for life, we have great original music and people say what they think.

in this shit week for new zealand, our first ever state of national emergency, i want to pay tribute to a true kiwi icon. for the life of me, i cant think of anyone more truly iconic (though mayor tim shadbolt is a very close second) than kiwi musician, Dave Dobbyn. what a freaking legend. in fact, i am going to go so far as to bestow my greatest honor on him - the sun shines out of that mans arse! prove me wrong, i dare you. when we see him perform live i have two strong reactions. 1. i think this is considered normal - i sing along as loud as i bloody can. 2. i blub my way through his songs. i genuinely 'snot down my face' blubber. this is for another 2 reasons. 1. he is so transparent when he preforms and his songs are effing awesome - i goddam love it! 2.prepare yourself... he actually looks like my dad! REALLY!! what makes that even funnier is that my dad has dark curly hair, and dave dobbyn has ginger curly hair - and i am a true drapes and rug matching ginga. too much information? chill out. but i have a photo of dave and i have a photos of dad (jock) to show you...what do you think?

until recently, i actually thought that we kiwis had made up the word 'kiwiana'. then i was looking around on e-bay and discovered close to a billion 'americana' stores and i came across the term 'australiana'. not a native term after all. according to the oxford dictionary it means 'denoting things associated with a person, place, or field of interest'. as in americana, victoriana, and yes, kiwiana.
new zealand is a new country, as far as countries go. our iconography is quite new as well, mid-20th century items mostly, according to wikipedia. tonight though, as i write this blog, i have a particular image in mind. small town new zealand. from my own country-bumpkin perspective.
my ma's family are from a region in the mid-west north island called the king country. in particular, a tiny, and i do mean TINY, town called ohura. it used to be a pumping town, until the local coal mines shut due to political and environmental pressure. now it is part of forgotten highway 43.
mark and i went back there for christmas just gone. my great aunt hazel is an 81 year old wonder and will have my head for telling you her age. what a woman!! she runs the local church, rides around town on a push-bike, bakes up a storm and recently won a Queens Service Award for her work in the community. she was the chaplain at the ohura prison for many years, until that too shut down five years ago. she is phenomenal. i hadn't been back to ohura since mark and i've been together and i wanted him to know where i'm from and get to know this amazing octogenarian.
thanks, auntie hazel, for a great time. love you.
so i hope you enjoy these photos - this town is an extreme example of small town nz. about 200 people. maximum. it is very very peaceful. and incredibly kiwiana.

merry christmas!! and since i am SO freaking behind in blogging, really truly, happy 2011. i hope you and yours had a safe and happy holiday period.

i've been thinking about my lack of blogging and realised that its become exaggerated since i stopped my 'making a major success out of my small business' theme. i need a new theme. i'm a projects and guidelines kind of Sheila. i need a regular shove of motivation. and i need something to write about. don't you love how self-aware i am? please tell me i am not the only one who struggles with being self-motivated.

that's what i love about the new year actually. i really like resolutions! my big resolution for the past couple years has been to wear heels more often, and it worked. i do wear them 'more often'.

anyway, new years resolution no. 483 (or thereabouts): create new blog theme.
new years resolution no. 484: post new blog weekly.

for the record, one is supposed to blog about something they are passionate about and know a bit about. other than being passionately anti-red-light-runners and the lotteries commission, i'm obsessed with kiwiana and spreading the aroha. that means love, and is pronounced with a rolled 'r' just by the way. yup, i'm a natural at this.

so...i pledge to write a weekly email about kiwiana. in search of kiwiana. all things kiwiana. wish me luck! p.s. i know its freaking late, but here is a wee taste of kiwiana christmas - cinema styles!
i hope this post finds you all well and beginning to indulge in this lovely christmas season. i can personally guarantee that our house is bedecked and besparkled and most of all, betwinkled. i really don't know any other inanimate object that can make me happier than twinkling lights.

to get some rest in preparation for this mad season we are off to whangamata beach for the weekend with friends. delightful. but before we head off (mark is waiting patiently, watching cricket) i have to show these paintings!

for quite some time now i have been raving on at hubby about how our favourite nz-queen-elect, ruth phipps, is actually the most phenomenal artist. really really. then we were honored to be invited to the opening night of her exhibition, which was done in collaboration with other clever clogs kiwi artists.

i love artists. i really do. i think the sun shines out of the bottom of a person who can create something that makes you stop and stare and feel richer just for looking. i know my photos do NOT do ruths art pieces any justice, so i have taken these from her website! ha. they are too good for my lack of camera skills to slay them.

ruths paintings are based on the concept of linen, precious heirlooms passed down from mother to daughter. to convey this she used oil on linen.

what i really enjoyed about these pieces, and you will see what i mean, is how perfectly ruth conveyed the different folds of fabric in the paintings. sensational!!! seeing these works in person was actually quite spiritual. i don't say that lightly. being in bed is a big thing to me, with both trying to get to sleep and trying to wake up being something my dna didnt gear me to do so well. seeing these peaceful paintings focused on bed linen was cathartic.

now, i will let them speak for themselves.
love love love!

a couple weekends ago was labour weekend, a long weekend. mark started a new job yesterday and wasn't able to take a break in between. so i booked a bach just out of piha (west coast of auckland, beautiful black-sand paradise).

it has been in their family since 1922, and they have kept it pretty much as it was. the property, that is. the interior of the bach is newly painted, decorated with kiwiana and surrounded by stunning native bush.

the house is not on the beach, about a 10 minute drive, but set up in the waitakere ranges overlooking lion rock at piha beach, seen above. stunning.

i met up with an incredibly creative friend, lovely stacy, who gave me some great advice. feed my spirit. put aside what i was stuck on and focus on feeding my spirit. genius! so i have been. the photo above, rangitoto island, was part of that. mark and i went for a few lovely early evening walks. how amazing is the auckland waterfront? we really don't make enough use of it, considering we live 3 minutes from it.
its 3.33 am. mark is asleep. the cats are asleep. there is no sleep for this brighteyed one (me) tonight. and i have been on a detox all week. i'm not feeling grumpy though, in fact, i feel pretty good. but it's because of i have two heaters on, a glass of whiskey to my right, and a head full of bad bad swear words to keep me happy.

in my hour and a half of trying to get to sleep tonight, i had the opportunity to reflect on comfort 'food'. i'm not really a sweet tooth kind of girl and i'm not really a shopping therapist kind anymore either. no. my comfort-seeking usually revolves around a good glass of whiskey - sigh - and harry potter, my ridiculously adorable cats and getting bad people in trouble. and swearing.

yes, i said swearing. big, fat, offensive swear words.

today mark and i celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary in style - surrounded by swearing, hilarious swearing. about a billion months ago i emailed our favourite show (7days) about tickets, and after so much postponement on their behalf, we went to the show tonight. we had the best fricken seats in the world. middle of the front row. (7days is a weekly news show, hosted by comedian jeremy corbett, with one t, two t's? and two competing groups of 3 comedians.

my absolute delight in what some refer to as 'cuss words' became obvious to me as i realised i was actually crestfallen when corbs (aforementioned funny host) said that they were going to try to cut back on bad language. actually, my thoughts were 'well, what's the point then?' and 'why would they do that?!'.

but, i was not disappointed. there were about 4,000,170 swear words - really bad ones - and i was happy. so so happy. i was so happy in fact, that a total stranger turned to me at half time and said genuinely, "your laugh is lovely" and when mark and i, and about 20 people sitting around us stared slack jawed at her she clarified "so...hmmm...distinctive".

so you can tsk tsk all you like. but when you are awake at a million o'clock in the morning, and you mistake the local Tui singing out as a badly behaved car alarm, what will be keeping you warm?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2439119747973451720.post-42952942787928530082010-09-23T01:40:00.000+12:002010-09-23T01:40:07.201+12:00bit of a change...

hello lovely readers

i have a bit of a change to announce, but before i do, don't you l.o.v.e. this cool card that stacy made for mark?! i like it a heck of a lot. i want to claim it for my own devices, but mark intends to keep it. damn it.
in fact, the 'pow' factor of the card is very...timely. it is time i was honest with the world - i bit off more than i could chew, new zealand.
who knew? some say i jump in the deep end, some say less polite things. i just said i wanted to make blanket statements in to something huge...and i needed a blog to keep me accountable. now, i say, i still want to make blanket statements bloody enormous, but perhaps not in the next few months. and also, i really enjoy blogging about things both related and unrelated to making a stunning-grassroots-company-successful-whilst-being-blogged-about.
i cannot take credit for these clear thoughts. they come from a team i call my 'inspiring inspirators' (behind their backs only):
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">John Brown Rose - when life threw her a pack of cards and said 'pick-up 52' she said, 'i have decided that completing one task a day at the moment is what is realistic and i'm fine with it'. how flipping good is that, especially when there is so much we feel like we could be doing.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Dee - who found new exciting direction in her blog journey that energised her. that's what i wanna do! sorry deedee, i am copy-catting. again.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Alisha - who does jolly well at taking massive (Read: MASSIVE) changes in her stride and learning something brilliant in the process: new scheduling, finding sources to write from that i personally find freedom in, a wicked tomato timekeeper and expressing perfectly what we all want to say about life's 'Surprise!' factors.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Stacy - my friend in shining armour and hot accessories. in her lovely 'stroke the shoulder, stroke the shoulder, kick the ass' manner, suggested that i take a step back in a few areas so that i could maintain some sanity. love you raceylaceystacy. that was the clincher really wasn't it? mark thanks you for your guidance!

so yep, onwards and upwards! for those of you who are following me simply because i promised to make your business successful by feeding you the crumbs from my blog...i apologise. like dee, i am loving blogging about creativity, recording life as it is, making the most of moments. that is really the thing isn't it - blogging makes me cherish more than i did. and to record it. and in the words of pat douglas, 'make memories'. on that note, i bid thee goodnight and thank you for the time you take out of very busy lives to read my humble (mostly) thoughts. one million kisses to you, from me, the lemon meringue girl. x

its funny - my experience has been that people either love it or hate it. i sincerely loooove paris. it is divine. here are just a few pics from our four days there. a close friend and i, mari, fell in love with this beautiful city the minute we got off the eurostar. what is not to love? i'm sure i will be blogging again about this place - i know its off topic - but really, i felt like i had misspent half my life not having discovered paris earlier.

there was not one square inch of the place that didn't inspire me. the architecture is ridiculous, so breathtaking. i had to keep stopping mari, saying 'i just need to stop and absorb it all'. her patience was appreciated! and the people - looove them! so friendly, laid back, elegant. and the language....sigh...what a language.

I hope that's the phrase I was looking for - the one that means being stressed about what is coming up. If that's not what the Title actually says, that's what I mean.

In 7 days (whetu in Maori, chut in Cantonese), I am hopping on a big bird (a lovely Cathay Pacific safety rated bird) and heading to London! This will be the first time in nearly 2.5 years since I saw one of my absolute FAVE's in the world, Mari. Then I will also be staying with one of my other absolute FAVE families, Dan, Ali and perfect niece Naomi.

I am away for 5 whole weeks - thus the anticipatory anxiety. Not so big at being away from Mark for that long. Yup. I was that homesick child.

So, as I wind down from exhibition and get wound up about the amazing holiday in London, Bristol, Sheffield, Paris etc etc, I have taken some photos of the things I love around my house. Then I can look back on this post whilst drunk in Paris and cry about how cute my cats are and wonder if my orchids are surviving! I only have one pic of 'the handsome' to add, and sadly, it was not taken at our home!

Then when I work out that all I am worried about is actually just experiencing the feeling, I tell myself the truths of the situation. Keep replacing the lies with the truths when they come up. Spot the old counsellor in me??!! I did this a LOT before the exhibition.

Tip 8: Re. Pretty things - I am gonna take a quote from James Dobson here, who reminded us that women are re-energised when surrounded by things of beauty. Hello!

So sorry for my long absence...who would have known how much goes into an exhibition, and the recovery required after?! Seriously, I take my hat off to the wonderful event planners of our world - Hail oh Organised Ones!

I am not sure how many variations of 'focused' behaviour exist, but I predominantly fall into the basket labelled 'Bossy focused person with exact idea of what they want'. That is what I was like right up to the day of the exhibition. Actually, until the night before.Thank you God for Gin and Tonic, really, thank you. And for patient husbands. And understanding friends who don't respond in terror to maniacal behaviour and emails. And for obsessive prior organisation, four incredible, focused and patient women who helped me set up - phew - and a lovely hubby who became 'runner'. Because, truly, I moved from the above basket to the one labelled 'Stands wide-eyed and provides unintelligible responses'.

Anyhoo...it was a great night! I actually didn't want to leave at the end. The place looked ridiculously incredible - it did. I mean it. Wait till I get the photos to prove it (thank God also for fellow bloggers who remember their cameras when you don't!) - you too will agree that it was bloody amazing!!

To top it off, Cigana did a great job of the food (see below and drool in envy) and we had three handsome young guys making and delivering coffee! And they cleared up afterwards with their lovely mama.

So, check out the photos below .Mark remembered to take some photos so we got five which I have tried to turn into as many as I can with my tricky skills. And for the amazing people in my blackboard heart above, thank you thank you thank you. Arohanui. Especially to Dee - the most amazing graphic designer who created my business cards (which are the BS logo above). And the poster to the exhibition - I will be putting that in the next post. Dee's work rocks my world, Whoop whoop!

I will write up my tips for the adventurous-hearted when I post the rest of the photos of this most auspicious event! Thanks for reading. x
I hope this post finds you happy and well. I took this photo in my sun-room in one of the three minutes of sun we had this week.

As it turns out...I have my first exhibition in less than 4 weeks - 26 days. Pause and breathe. These last few days I have been thinking about whether it's possible to get occupational overuse syndrome from embroidering...

Anyhoo, as I squirrel away cushions and such in preparation for said exhibition, I have been searching for sparkles to be inspired by. There are so many new and vintage pretty pretty things being handmade by clever people who bless me with their online shops. If I was not saving pennies for my August trip to Europe (topic of fun future blogs) I would be waiting by my mailbox for these pretty sparkly objects to arrive.

Then this evening I stumbled across an article highlighting the growth of 'handmade' in Hong Kong! Two of my favourite things - Hong Kong, sigh, and handmade. Then, to my absolute delight, the article described an organisation started by an American living in Hong Kong to work with disadvantaged local women. And their products are stunning. STUNNING! Please excuse the all-capital excitement just recorded, but you have to see these things. I am regenerated by these incredible bags.

So I leave you with these goodies - Bez & Oho. Drool away friends, drool away. My personal fave is the last photo...sigh. I am truly inspired.

What is the most important thing in the world?

It is people! It is people! It is people!

This is my absolute favourite Maori proverb. I guess it may rub some people the wrong way, but personally, I love the total commitment to the answer - It is people! Exclamation mark.

This is what I have been thinking about these last few days. How far could I get, in any area in life, without the people around me?

That's where everything on this earth begins and ends, right? I don't mean that in a 'replacing spirituality' kind of way. I mean, from the beginning of our life, people, other people, impact us. We are grown in a person, fed by people, taught affection and character and habits by people...

To us, as human beings. These are the things I have been mulling over this last week (in no particular order)...

The comments people made when they saw my first cushions and the seed planted by that

The patience of friends when I get stuck in a creative rut

Consistent encouragement from particular friends

Lessons people have taught me to continue the growth of my creativity

Friends who come into my life for a particular season and taken me on a path I could not have known without them!

Certain people have more influence on my creativity

How grateful I am to those who have taken the time to teach me, encourage me, do tasks for me, love me and buy my product!

Do I do enough for you to warrant an equal relationship, over all?

How can I pay all these good works forward, look after others like I have been looked after?

How do I get and keep peoples attention for Blanket Statements?

Cats are human too

My husband is perfect. Just perfect.

This is what has been filling my ginger head, wonderful people. I appreciate your patience, guidance, love and incredibly helpful teachings.
Ruche, a beautiful site with beautiful products, has posted a competition on their latest entry. Paste their lookbook on your blog, twitter, etc, post them the link to prove it, and you go into a competition to win the coolest nautical themed bag I think I have ever seen. So here we go...and in doing so, I make you aware of this great site out there for you to subscribe to. Surely that covers several of my all-important-key-points!

Here is the stunning Ruche summer 2010 Lookbook - enjoy. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. And good luck if you decide to enter the competition.

What a great way to get people to send out your product guide! I am very inspired.
PS. You get an entry for every link you include!! That is why 'all links lead to ruche'!
